2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 23: Plateau United FC maintains momentum to pick away point against Niger Tornadoes

Posted : 11 February 2025

Heading into the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 23, Niger Tornadoes had picked up six points from a possible 15 since Matchday 18. However, after securing a win in Jos against the Peace Boys on Matchday 3, the Changi Boys were eager for an opportunity to secure a double over the Peace Boys.

The Peace Boys seemed to be resurging, following a crucial draw and a win against Rivers United on Match Days 19 and 20, respectively. However, setbacks against Katsina United and 3SC of Ibadan threatened their momentum.

It was a gritty encounter at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, with a difficult playing surface. Papa Daniel’s 59th-minute curler and Kalu Samuel’s 88th-minute finish proved crucial for the final outcome of the game.

Despite the challenging playing conditions, both sides had a few scoring opportunities, either thwarted by outstanding goalkeeping saves or excellent defending.

Expressing disappointment with the outcome, Niger Tornadoes' Technical Adviser, Majin Mohammed, admitted that he knew the game would be tough, especially since the Changi Boys had picked up maximum points in Jos on Match Day 3 and Plateau United was desperately searching for points.

Majin blamed the late collapse on a loss of concentration by his team but expressed hope of improving his team’s fortunes in upcoming matches.

Plateau United's Technical Adviser, Mbwas Mangut, stated that his team had prepared well and hoped to secure all three points but would be content with a point, given that their fight back paid off.

Mbwas called on fans to be patient, emphasizing that efforts are being made to ensure the team returns to where it belongs, while acknowledging that there were factors responsible for the team’s current position.

Eight home wins and two draws formed the overall picture in the 10 NPFL Matchday 23 engagements across the country.

Up next for the Peace Boys is a home tie against North East opposition, El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri, in Jos on Match Day 24.
