Plateau United FC consolidates on winning streak

Posted : 04 March 2024

The 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) encounter concluded in a 1-1 draw when the Benin Warlords visited Jos in July 2023. During an unbeaten run-inspired campaign, they secured the result, but a lackluster NPFL 2023/2024 season has seen them drop 8 points out of 9 available in 3 matchdays leading up to Match Day 23 in Jos.

Despite a momentary dip in form against Shooting Stars Sports Club Of Ibadan on Match Day 21, the Peace Boys responded strongly on Match Day 22 in Awka, accumulating 7 points out of a possible 9.

Plateau United dominated the first half, with few chances for both sides. Chisom Okereke of Bendel Insurance and Plateau United's Sunday Anthony came close to scoring, leaving the scores goalless at halftime.

In the 50th minute, Moses Adikwu received the ball from deep and delivered a long-range pass to Mustapha Abdullahi. His sublime cutback found Alex Enejo, who blasted past Amas Obasogie for the opening goal.

In the 66th minute, Adams Yakubu combined with Wale Doyeni, who provided a sublime pass to Harrison Ebah. Ebah's close control allowed him to set up Barnabas Daniel for the second goal.

Bendel Insurance created anxious moments in the deep, with substitute Michael Enaruna hitting the woodwork after a fine combination move, leaving the scores 2-0 at full time.

Bendel Insurance head coach Monday Odigie noted that while his side stayed organized defensively after the first half, they lost discipline in the second half.

Plateau United technical adviser Mbwas Mangut acknowledged the need to give some players who performed well in training the chance to feature in games, a decision paying off at the moment.

On Match Day 23, only five games were held, resulting in three home wins, one away win for Rangers International of Enugu over Niger Tornadoes in Kaduna, and a draw.

The Peace Boys now leap to the second place with 41 points, pending the outcome of NPFL Match Day 23, day 2 schedules, while Rangers International follows closely in third place.

Next up for the Peace Boys is a trip to Akure to face Sunshine Stars on Match Day 24.

A record turnout of fans easily rivaled the attraction of the Manchester derby in the English Premier League, held almost simultaneously. This signifies the growing fan base and loyalty of the Peace Boys.
