Chelsea's development squad kicked off their Premier League Cup campaign with a decisive 6-3 victory over Brentford at Kingsmeadow on Sunday.
Chelsea manager Filipe Coelho started two players of Nigerian descent, Tyrique George and Somto Boniface, in the match. Brentford's Nigeria U20 international Benjamin Fredrick was absent from the squad for this game.
The first half saw Brentford take the lead with a goal from Deivid Washington and a brace from Ashley Hay. Chelsea went into the break trailing but made a strong comeback in the second half.
Tyrique George made an immediate impact after the break, scoring to equalize within two minutes. He then gave Chelsea the lead for the first time with a well-placed volley six minutes later.
Brentford's hopes of leveling the score were dashed when Ishe Samuels-Smith’s cross led to an own goal by Headman. Isaac Holland managed to pull one back for Brentford in the 66th minute, but Chelsea restored their two-goal lead with another own goal in the 77th minute.
With just seven minutes remaining, Tyrique George completed his hat-trick by scoring past Eyestone, securing the final score of 6-3 for Chelsea.
Chelsea's development squad will next face West Brom in a Premier League 2 match at home on Saturday, September 21, 2024.
