Phil Foden's hat-trick inspires Manchester City to dominant victory over Aston Villa

Posted : 04 April 2024

Phil Foden showcased his brilliance with a remarkable hat-trick as Manchester City maintained pressure on their Premier League title rivals, Arsenal and Liverpool, securing a commanding victory over Aston Villa at Etihad Stadium. Despite the absence of key players Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne from the starting lineup, City proved too formidable for an injury-hit Villa side, further compounded by the loss of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to illness just before kick-off.

In a display of City's depth, it was Rodri who broke the deadlock after 11 minutes, capitalizing on Jeremy Doku's delivery to slot home at the near post. However, Villa swiftly responded, with Jhon Duran leveling the score nine minutes later with a well-taken finish following a slick interchange with Morgan Rogers.

Undeterred, Foden seized control of the game, restoring City's lead just before halftime with a composed low free-kick from 20 yards out, exploiting a gap in Villa's defensive wall left by Nicolo Zaniolo. The young midfielder further extended City's advantage in the second half, demonstrating his clinical finishing with two more goals, including a spectacular drive into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Despite City's dominance, they were denied a fifth goal in stoppage time when Sergio Gomez struck the post with a side-footed effort from Josko Gvardiol's cut-back. The victory sees City level on points with Liverpool and trailing Arsenal by just one point, setting up an intense title race as the season progresses.
