Manchester City forward Phil Foden was honored with the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award on Tuesday. The accolade follows a remarkable season in which Foden played a pivotal role in City’s achievement of an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title. The 24-year-old's impressive performance included 19 goals and eight assists, contributing significantly to Pep Guardiola's squad as they narrowly secured the title ahead of Arsenal on the final day of the season.
Expressing his pride and gratitude, Foden thanked his fellow professionals, acknowledging the importance of their recognition. He also extended his appreciation to Pep Guardiola, the coaching staff, and his teammates, who, according to Foden, have been instrumental in his continuous improvement. Looking ahead, Foden is focused on defending City's Premier League title, following their 2-0 victory over Chelsea in their opening match of the new season.
In addition to the PFA Player of the Year award, Foden also received the Premier League Player of the Season award and the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year honor. City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, praised Foden for embodying the club's values, highlighting his talent, drive for self-improvement, and humility, which have made him a popular figure within the club.
The awards ceremony also saw Chelsea's Cole Palmer named the men's PFA Young Player of the Year, marking the first time since the 2009-10 season that both the senior and young player awards were won by English players. Palmer, who was second only to Erling Haaland in the Premier League scoring charts, had a standout season following his move from City to Chelsea. In the women's category, Khadija Shaw of Manchester City was named Player of the Year after leading the Women's Super League in goals with 21, despite City finishing just behind Chelsea for the title.
