Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has given an update on Kelechi Iheanacho's fitness ahead of the team's first match in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations against Equatorial Guinea.
The Golden Ball winner of the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup missed the pre-AFCON training camp in Abu Dhabi due to rehabilitation for an injury sustained while playing for Leicester City.
Iheanacho's Leicester City teammate, Wilfred Ndidi, is sidelined for three months with a muscular injury, and Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen withdrew from the AFCON squad.
Peseiro assured that Iheanacho will join the Super Eagles in Côte d'Ivoire for the tournament. After the Guinea match, Peseiro stated that Iheanacho had completed treatment in Leicester City.
As one of the most experienced players in the current Super Eagles squad, Iheanacho, with 50 appearances, played every game in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 27-year-old has been a key player, contributing in each of his last five appearances for the national team since the last season, even wearing the captain's armband in a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho.
