Peseiro, the Super Eagles coach, explains Osimhen's Napoli unhappiness

Posted : 07 November 2023
Last season, Osimhen achieved a remarkable milestone by leading Napoli to their first Scudetto in over three decades. The Nigerian international was prolific, notching goals both in the league and the Champions League, eventually becoming the first African to claim the Serie A top scorer title.

During the summer, Osimhen's popularity soared, and there were numerous reports linking him to multi-million euro transfers to some of Europe's top clubs. Despite enticing offers, including a reported €100 million bid from PSG and interest from Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, Osimhen chose to remain in Naples.

While transfer rumors swirled, Napoli made efforts to secure Osimhen with a contract extension. However, as of now, the former Lille forward has yet to commit to a new deal with the Italian champions.

Osimhen began the season in excellent form, netting six goals in his first eight Serie A games. Nevertheless, controversies surrounding him persisted, including an unprovoked social media attack from his own club, Napoli.

To compound matters, the 24-year-old striker suffered an injury while on international duty with Nigeria and has been sidelined since his last appearance against Fiorentina on October 8.

Peseiro believes that all these factors have contributed to Osimhen's recent unhappiness. He explained, "He is not happy due to the injury, which is unfortunate news for Napoli and the Italian championship. These past weeks have not been straightforward with ongoing contract rumors, transfer market speculations, and the TikTok video issue, especially for a prominent player like him. Nevertheless, I know he is eager to return to the field as soon as possible."

Osimhen has been absent from Napoli for a few days, addressing personal matters in Nigeria. He is expected to return to Naples soon, although he will not be available for Napoli's Champions League clash with Union Berlin on Wednesday.
