Diogo Peral will take over as the head coach of Cape Town City for the remainder of the season, with experienced coach Roger de Sa joining him as an assistant. This decision came after the club parted ways with Muhsin Ertugral on Monday.
Peral has been an integral part of the team for several years, serving as an assistant to both Jan Olde Reikerink and Eric Tinkler. He previously had a brief stint as head coach in 2021, when Olde Reikerink was dismissed, and before Tinkler took over the reins.
In 2023, Peral earned his UEFA A coaching license, completing the course in Scotland over a year. This accomplishment has prepared him for this new responsibility as the head coach of Cape Town City.
With only seven matches left in the season, City owner John Comitis has decided that Peral is the best option to guide the team. Alongside him, Roger de Sa will assist, with Lebogang Manyama also remaining in a coaching role.
De Sa, who has a wealth of experience, is returning to South African football after his time as an assistant to Carlos Queiroz with Egypt at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, where they finished as runners-up. He also worked with Iran at the 2022 World Cup and Qatar.
The 60-year-old De Sa’s most recent role in the Premier Soccer League was as coach of Platinum Stars during the 2017-18 season. His return to domestic football will bring added experience to the coaching staff.
Cape Town City and Ertugral mutually agreed to part ways after their disappointing home loss to Marumo Gallants, which extended the team’s winless streak to 10 matches. The loss left the club in 13th place in the Betway Premiership, just two points above the relegation zone. Peral’s first match as head coach will be an away game against SuperSport United in Polokwane on Sunday, March 30.
