Veteran defender Pepe made history in the UEFA Champions League, becoming the competition's oldest scorer at the age of 40 years and 254 days during Porto's 2-0 victory over Royal Antwerp. This achievement surpassed Francesco Totti's previous record of 38 years and 59 days when he scored for Roma against CSKA Moscow in November 2014.
In this remarkable feat, Pepe headed in Francisco Conceição's cross in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, doubling Porto's lead. Notably, Pepe is a three-time Champions League winner from his tenure with Real Madrid.
Super Eagles legend John Obi Mikel holds the distinction of being the oldest Nigerian player to score in the Champions League, accomplishing this feat on February 16, 2016, when he scored for Chelsea against Paris Saint-Germain at the age of 28 years and 300 days. This makes him 11 years and 319 days younger than Pepe, the new oldest scorer in the Champions League. Mikel's achievement broke the previous Nigerian record held by Chinedu Obasi, who accomplished it at the age of 28 years and 142 days.
