Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed uncertainty about Ederson’s future at the club, amidst interest from the Saudi Pro League. Although Guardiola considers the Brazilian goalkeeper his first-choice, he acknowledged that Ederson's status could change depending on external factors. Despite choosing backup Stefan Ortega for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid last season, Guardiola stated that there have been no recent contacts regarding Ederson’s departure.
Speaking after City’s 4-3 pre-season defeat to Celtic in North Carolina, Guardiola admitted he would like Ederson to stay but noted that it ultimately depends on other clubs' actions. He emphasized that the situation remains fluid, with no recent discussions about a transfer, and suggested that the outcome would be clearer as the transfer window progresses.
Ederson appeared in the second half of City’s match against Celtic, which was their opening pre-season game. Guardiola’s comments imply that the goalkeeper’s future remains in question until the end of the transfer window on August 30. Meanwhile, Kalvin Phillips is expected to leave City, most likely on loan, after a difficult period last season that affected his chances of making Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.
Phillips was substituted at halftime during the match against Celtic, a decision Guardiola attributed to the need to manage the player’s fitness after an injury-ridden end to the previous season. Guardiola admitted uncertainty about Phillips’s future but reassured that the situation will become clearer as the transfer window nears its end.
