Pep Guardiola Demands More from Jack Grealish After Benching in City Win

Posted : 06 January 2025

Pep Guardiola has stated that Jack Grealish must fight for his place in Manchester City's starting line-up and return to the form he showed during the club's treble-winning campaign. The 29-year-old played a key role in City's 2022-23 season, contributing five goals and 11 assists across 50 appearances, helping the team secure the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup titles. However, this season, Grealish has struggled to impress, and he was dropped to the bench during City's 4-1 victory over West Ham United on Saturday, with Brazilian Savinho starting in his place.

Guardiola explained that Savinho was in better shape than Grealish, which is why he chose to start him over the England international. The manager acknowledged that Grealish’s performance during the treble-winning season was what he wanted to see, but emphasized the need for consistent effort. "They have to fight," Guardiola said, urging Grealish to prove himself daily in training and match situations to earn his spot in the starting XI.

While Grealish has struggled this season, including a period sidelined due to injury, Guardiola expressed confidence in his abilities. He emphasized that Grealish's quality is unquestionable, as he would not be at City otherwise. Guardiola reiterated that Grealish has shown the level of play he is capable of and expects him to display that every day. City will next face fourth-tier side Salford City in the FA Cup on January 11, providing an opportunity for Grealish to prove his readiness.
