Pep Guardiola, Manchester City's manager, remains confident that rival Premier League clubs are eager to see the English champions punished over 115 alleged breaches of financial regulations. A long-anticipated hearing into these charges, initially brought by the Premier League in February 2023, is set to begin on Monday. The potential consequences for City could be severe, with possibilities including a significant points deduction or even expulsion from the league if they are found guilty of some or all of the charges.
City’s success under Guardiola since his arrival in 2016 has been notable, with the club dominating English football in recent years. However, critics such as Javier Tebas, president of Spain’s LaLiga, have frequently questioned the club’s financial practices. Tebas recently revealed that he has spoken to several Premier League clubs who are pushing for sanctions against City. Guardiola, when asked about Tebas' comments, acknowledged that it is no surprise that some clubs want City to be penalized, but he emphasized the importance of waiting for the independent panel’s decision.
Guardiola stressed that while there may be expectations for City to be punished, he believes in the principle that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. He called on Premier League clubs and critics like Tebas to exercise patience and trust in the judicial process. Guardiola reiterated that City maintain their innocence and are prepared to defend themselves before the independent panel, urging all parties to await the outcome of the hearing.
Manchester City faces allegations spanning from 80 breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018 to 35 counts of failing to cooperate with the Premier League’s investigation. The charges include accusations of providing inaccurate financial details, such as misleading information about sponsorship revenue and salaries. Despite the serious nature of the claims, City has consistently denied any wrongdoing. Since Sheikh Mansour’s takeover in 2008, the club has secured eight Premier League titles, including four consecutive victories in the last four seasons.
