2024 NWFL Championship Match Day 4: Pelican Stars, Osun Babes and Gallant Queens edge closer to promotion playoffs

The 2024 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship is intensifying as teams approach the decisive stages for promotion and relegation playoffs.


The Match Day 4 fixtures at St. Patrick College Field and UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar produced critical results that could shape the outcome of the season.


Pelican Stars continued their impressive form with a 2-1 victory over First Mahi Babes, securing their third consecutive win. Despite falling behind early to a goal by Iorliam Winfred in the 16th minute, Pelican Stars rallied after missing an initial penalty. They equalized in the 68th minute through another penalty, successfully converted by Perpetual Ndekani. Nancy Njimogu then scored the decisive goal four minutes later, ensuring a crucial win for the hosts in Group A1.

 


In the same group, Imo Striker Queens emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over Castmog Ladies. The match was marked by an own goal from Taibat Akinleye and a second-half goal by Harmony Chidi.


Group A2 at UJ Esuene Stadium showcased a high-scoring spectacle with 12 goals across two matches. Osun Babes delivered a dominant 7-0 performance against Kaduna Queens, with Kafayat Bashiru scoring a hat-trick and Rebecca Omodele netting twice. Grace Marcus and Victory Odanlumen also contributed to the scoreline for the Omoluabi Ladies.


Gallant Queens secured a commanding 5-0 victory over Moje Queens, with Favour Okafor scoring twice. Afusat Bello, Blessing Dabrinze, and Latifat Usman also added to the tally for the army team.


In Group B1, Chosen Generation Angels and Unification FC played to a 1-1 draw. Philomena Ologunleko’s stunning free kick gave Unification FC the lead, but Adekunle Mary equalized for Chosen Generation Angels.


Delta Babes came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory over Papa Soccer Angels. Ogwez Faith scored twice to overturn an own goal from Uche Ambrose and secure the win.


A rest day will be observed on Thursday, September 5, 2024.


The final group stage matches are scheduled for Friday, September 6, 2024, which will determine the teams advancing to the playoffs.
