Payne dreads pre-season but is set for Everton debut

Posted : 18 September 2024

Everton’s Toni Payne, a Super Falcons star, has admitted her dislike for pre-season but is eagerly anticipating the start of the Women’s Super League season this weekend. Payne, who recently joined Everton after a six-year stint with Sevilla, is keen to make her mark with her new team.

Having joined Everton as their first summer signing, Payne faced delays in pre-season training due to her international duties with the Super Falcons at the 2024 Olympic Games, where she featured in every match for her team.

She made her unofficial debut in a friendly match against Newcastle United on August 18 and was a starter in Everton’s goalless draw against Liverpool on September 13, their final pre-season fixture.

To prepare for the season opener against Brighton, Payne also played against Aston Villa, which helped her adjust to the physical demands and pace of the Women’s Super League.

During the friendly against Liverpool, Payne experienced the passionate support of Everton’s fans, who cheered her on, enhancing her anticipation for the competitive matches ahead.

In an interview with Everton TV, Payne expressed her eagerness for the season to begin, despite her aversion to pre-season. She highlighted the value of playing strong teams before the season starts, which she believes will help Everton perform well against Brighton.

After a mid-table finish in the Women’s Super League last season, Everton is looking to improve their performance and achieve better results in the upcoming campaign.
