Paul Onuachu expected to receive more opportunities at Southampton

Posted : 14 October 2024

Southampton legend Francis Benali has urged the club to provide striker Paul Onuachu with more opportunities following his appearance in the team's 3-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Despite the disappointing result, Benali remains optimistic about the 30-year-old forward's potential and believes he can contribute positively to the squad.

Onuachu made his much-anticipated return to Southampton during the match, marking his first appearance for the club in 14 months. He came on as a substitute for Mateus Fernandes in the 74th minute, having spent the previous season on loan at Trabzonspor in Turkey. During his time there, the Super Eagles striker had a standout season, netting 17 goals and providing four assists in 25 appearances.

Although negotiations for a permanent transfer to Trabzonspor fell through over the summer, Onuachu’s recent performance has rekindled hopes for his future at Southampton. Benali reflected on the match against Arsenal, noting that while the team faced challenges against the Gunners' superior quality, Onuachu's presence was a positive sign.

In his column for the Daily Echo, Benali expressed his feelings after the game, stating, “Despite the loss, there were some encouraging signs. Cameron Archer’s brilliant opening goal gave us a glimmer of hope.” He emphasized that Onuachu’s involvement was noteworthy, highlighting how the striker made an impression on the match.

Benali acknowledged that although Southampton struggled to keep up with Arsenal, Onuachu's performance suggested he could be a viable option moving forward. “He left his mark on the game and showed he could be valuable, even if he was close to leaving this summer. We still need to see more from him before he can be considered for a starting role, but his display against Arsenal is a step in the right direction,” he explained.

Having dedicated 16 years to Southampton, Benali concluded by suggesting that Onuachu's recent opportunity to play was likely a consequence of Ross Stewart’s injury. This opens the door for more chances for the Nigerian forward as he aims to solidify his place within the squad.

The call for Onuachu to receive more chances reflects the belief in his abilities, and Benali’s support could play a crucial role in boosting the striker’s confidence as the season progresses.
