Legendary Northern Ireland goalkeeper Pat Jennings will still attend the unveiling of his statue in Newry, despite feeling unwell during the Tottenham vs. Chelsea game on Monday. Jennings was taken to the hospital for tests, which all came back clear, and he was discharged shortly after midnight.
The event's organizers confirmed that the unveiling will proceed as planned with Jennings in attendance. The "Big Pat Committee" stated that Jennings is feeling better after some rest and is looking forward to the statue's unveiling in his hometown of Newry.
Pat Jennings, who earned 119 caps for Northern Ireland and had a successful club career with Tottenham and Arsenal, expressed his pride in receiving this honor. His international record stood as the most capped player for the Northern Ireland men's team until it was surpassed by Steven Davis in October 2020. Jennings made his debut for the national team in 1964 at the age of 18 alongside the legendary George Best.
He also represented Northern Ireland in the 1982 and 1986 World Cups, with his final international appearance in a match against Brazil during the 1986 tournament in Mexico. In recognition of his contributions to football and charity, he was awarded a CBE in the New Year Honours in 2022, following his MBE in 1976.
