Parma appointed Cristian Chivu as their new head coach on Tuesday following the dismissal of Fabio Pecchia, who was sacked after a seven-match winless streak left the team struggling in the Serie A relegation zone.
Pecchia's departure came after a 1-0 home defeat to Roma over the weekend, marking Parma’s fourth consecutive loss and leaving them 18th in the standings, just one point behind Empoli. The team now faces a crucial derby against Bologna on Saturday as they fight to avoid relegation.
Chivu, a former Romania international, steps into his first senior coaching role, having reportedly agreed to a contract that runs until the end of next season. The 43-year-old had been out of work since departing Inter Milan’s youth setup last summer, where he had been developing young talents.
As a player, he enjoyed a decorated career, winning three Serie A titles and the 2010 Champions League with Inter under José Mourinho.
Pecchia had been at the helm since June 2022, guiding Parma to promotion by winning the Serie B title last season. However, his struggles in the top flight have now made him the eighth Serie A coach to be sacked this season.
If Parma remains in the relegation fight, they may face a play-off, as teams finishing 17th and 18th on equal points must compete over two legs to determine who drops to Serie B. In cases where multiple teams are tied, the two with the worst records among them will enter the play-off.
