Paris 2024: Super Falcons held by Ethiopia’s ‘Lucy’

Posted : 26 October 2023
Nigeria and Ethiopia's senior women's teams engaged in a hard-fought battle in Addis Ababa on Wednesday afternoon, with the game ending in a 1-1 draw, setting the stage for an intriguing return leg in Abuja next Tuesday.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade's powerful shot from the edge of the box, six minutes after the restart, restored parity at the Abebe Bikila Stadium, after the Ethiopian team surprisingly took the lead in the 6th minute through a goal by Birkie Amare from a corner kick.

With Asisat Oshoala in the top striker position, Uchenna Kanu and Gift Monday operated on the wings, while Michelle Alozie switched to left back to allow Nicole Payne to take charge on the right. Oluwatosin Demehin and Akudo Ogbonna controlled the center of the defense, and with Christy Ucheibe and Halimatu Ayinde unavailable, Peace Efih joined Toni Payne and Ajibade to orchestrate the midfield.

Both teams struggled to create many opportunities in a tightly contested first half, although Asisat Oshoala should have done better with a chance from Payne's cross midway through the period.

After Ajibade restored parity, the Falcons took full control, and substitute Ifeoma Onumonu should have put Nigeria in the lead in the 64th minute, only to be denied as she prepared to take a shot.

Payne and Onumonu combined to create a golden opportunity in the 79th minute, but once again, Oshoala failed to capitalize.

The Falcons believed they had secured the victory when Onumonu leaped above all to head the ball into the net at the last minute. However, Algerian referee Lamia Atman spotted foul play in the build-up.

Both teams will face each other again at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Tuesday, with the winner on aggregate advancing to the third round, where the winner of the Cameroon/Uganda fixture awaits.
