Paris 2024 Qualifiers: Super Falcons set to face Cameroon in third round

Posted : 02 November 2023
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) released the schedule for the third round of the Paris 2024 Women's Football Olympics qualification series on Wednesday.

In the fixtures released, the Super Falcons of Nigeria will face Cameroon, while other teams like South Africa, Ghana, and Morocco also face challenging third-round opponents.

The 2024 CAF Women's Olympic qualifying tournament has eight teams progressing to the third round.

Recall that Nigeria defeated Ethiopia 5-1 on aggregate, with a 4-0 win over Lucy Babes, setting up an intriguing clash with Cameroon for a spot in the fourth round.

Cameroon, on the other hand, qualified at the expense of Uganda, despite losing 1-0 in the first leg of their second-round clash. The Lionesses of Cameroon pulled off a stunning 3-0 win after extra time in Douala to complete an impressive comeback and set up a tie with Nigeria.

Ghana secured an easy win over Benin, claiming a 5-0 aggregate victory. The Black Queens won back-to-back with a 0-3 away win in Cotonou and a 2-0 victory in the return leg at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Zambia qualified with a walkover win over Mali after Mali withdrew from the tournament. Tunisia also advanced to the third round following the withdrawal of Ivory Coast.

Namibia, however, was outmatched by Morocco, with the Atlas Lionesses securing two 2-0 wins, claiming a 4-0 aggregate triumph. Tunisia's true strength will be tested by 2022 WAFCON finalists Morocco in what is expected to be a thrilling North African derby.

Botswana, ranked 150th by FIFA, was eliminated from the tournament by 152nd-ranked Tanzania. Tanzania gained confidence from their 2-0 victory in Dar es Salaam and completed the job with a hard-fought 0-1 win at the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone.

South Africa claimed a 3-1 aggregate victory over DR Congo, with star forward Thembi Kgatlana playing a significant role. Kgatlana scored the crucial equalizer in their 1-1 first-leg draw in Kinshasa and netted a brace that secured a 2-0 win in Johannesburg for the reigning African champions.

South Africa will be the favorites to advance to the fourth round when they face Tanzania, the lowest-ranked team remaining in the tournament.
