Paris 2024 Olympics: Wasteful Super Falcons surrender to Female Samba of Brazil

Posted : 25 July 2024

The Super Falcons began their Paris 2024 Olympics campaign with a shaky start on Thursday, losing to Brazil’s superior firepower in their opening Group C match.

Under the guidance of Randy Waldrum, the Nigerian side was wasteful and inexperienced in the first half, allowing the more seasoned Brazilian team to take advantage with a 1-0 lead by halftime.

The 39-year-old Brazilian captain, Marta, played a pivotal role in the Falcons' painful defeat at the Matmut Atlantique in Bordeaux, France. Her involvement led to Brazil’s narrow 1-0 victory in the first match of the Paris Olympics.

Brazil initially had a goal disallowed in the 36th minute due to VAR, but Marta quickly regained possession and, within 30 seconds, assisted Gabi Nunes, who scored in the 37th minute, securing the only goal of the match and three points for Brazil.

Nigeria squandered four scoring opportunities—two in each half—due to poor finishing. Additionally, Nigerian coach Randy Waldrum once again kept African Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala on the bench, as he had during the African qualifying stages.

In the final moments of the game, Nigeria struggled to find an equalizer. The Brazilians, who played a physically demanding game, were favored by Referee Kim Yujeong from Korea, with Brazil receiving 10 foul calls to Nigeria's 4. Brazil had one yellow card, while Nigeria had none.

The Samba girls blocked 5 of Nigeria’s 7 shots on goal, with the Nigerian goalkeeper making 4 saves. Nigeria’s defense had 11 goal kicks compared to Brazil’s 6 corner kicks. Brazil had better ball possession with 53% to Nigeria’s 47%.

The last encounter between Nigeria and Brazil's women’s teams was at the 2008 Summer Olympics, where Brazil defeated Nigeria 3-1.
