History was made in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 11 fixtures between visiting Kano Pillars FC and Gombe United FC in an eight-goal thriller.
The match will go down in records as one of the most entertaining matches of the season after it ended in a seven-goal thriller, thus marking the second-highest-scoring match of the season. The first thrilling encounter was on Match Day 1 when Bayelsa United FC faced Akwa United in an eight-goal thriller, with The Restoration Boys winning 5-3.
Another record was set as all five goals scored by Kano Pillars came from the boot of a single player, Yusuf Abdullahi. Abdullahi achieved this remarkable feat even before the hour mark of the game as he single-handedly tore Gombe United apart, securing a deserving 5-2 away win for Sai Masu Gida at Pantami Stadium, Gombe.
Abdullahi opened his account in the 7th minute, added another in the 14th minute, then scored in the 33rd, 50th, and 60th minutes.
Abdullahi's impressive record in a single match surpassed the four-year record of the highest number of goals set by Israel Aba of Sunshine Stars.
The last time a player scored four or more goals in the NPFL was in December 2019 when Israel Abia scored all four goals for Sunshine Stars in a 4-2 win over Nasarawa United.
The only remaining record was set by Emem Eduok, who scored six goals for Dolphins against Nembe City in 2014.
The 5-2 victory by Kano Pillars is also a record as the first away win for Kano Pillars since returning from relegation this season and is also the highest win by margin for the Sai Masu Gida side.
