Panama defeated Costa Rica 2-1 in their opening match of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup. This marks Panama's third consecutive victory against Costa Rica in Concacaf competition, following previous wins in the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League.
Panama made an impressive start to the game, taking the lead in the 23rd minute. Eric Davis provided a cross from the left wing, which was met by Jose Fajardo, who headed the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Fajardo had previously scored the winning goal in Panama's 1-0 victory over Costa Rica in the Concacaf Nations League.
Panama had a chance to extend their lead soon after, but Fajardo's shot was saved by Costa Rica goalkeeper Kevin Chamorro. Costa Rica also had opportunities to equalize, with Josimar Alcocer coming close on a breakaway, but Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera made a crucial save.
The second half saw both teams creating chances. Panama continued to apply pressure, with Ismael Diaz and Eric Davis having opportunities. Costa Rica fought back, with Joel Campbell's shot blocked by Mosquera.
However, it was Panama who landed another blow in the 68th minute when Michael Murillo delivered a pass into the area, allowing Edgar Barcenas to score with a header and give Panama a 2-0 lead.
In stoppage time, Costa Rica managed to pull a goal back through Aaron Suarez, who combined with Joel Campbell to reduce the deficit to 2-1. However, Panama held on to secure the victory and claim three points in the group stage.
