After two weeks of exciting and highly competitive football, the preliminary qualifiers of the Oyo State Governor's Cup 2024 have ended.
No fewer than 33 schools across the state made it to the next round (Zonal Elimination) of the competition, which will restart on Tuesday, May 28th, and continue until Friday, May 31st, in over five centers.
Speaking about the event, Yomi Elijah, CEO of the Schools' Sports Foundation, organizers of the Oyo State Governor's Cup, noted that over 200 schools from the thirty-three local government areas of Oyo State participated in the preliminary qualifiers.
The UK-trained football coach reiterated his team's commitment to hosting a near-perfect competition that would produce a worthy winner at the end of the day.
"Over 200 schools across the nooks and crannies of Oyo State participated in the preliminary qualifiers for places in the main area of the event, which starts on Tuesday.
"We had a hitch-free preliminary qualifiers and kudos must go to everyone who was involved.
“So far, we have been able to discover a lot of talents. We are committed to the growth of these talents, and that is why we are pleased to continue nurturing them for greatness," he concluded.
Venues and fixtures for the zonal elimination will be announced on Saturday, May 25th.
Some of the qualified schools are listed below: Baptist Grammar School, Ajaawa, Anglican Grammar School, Ogbomosho, Community Secondary School, Ahoro Dada, Baptist Grammar School, Ahoyaya, Olanipekun Memorial College, Kishi, Irepo Grammar School, Igboho, Muslim Grammar School, Igbeti, Obalufon Grammar School, Sepeteri, ADS High School, Ago-Are, Okeho Iganna Grammar School, Bioku Grammar School, Eruwa, Ayete Grammar School, Ayete, Ilupeju Community Grammar School, Iwere-ile, Muslim Grammar School, Otu, ADS, Saki, Owode CHS, Zumuratual Hujaj School, Bishop Phillips Academy, Bashorun High School, Oyo Community Secondary School.
The competition is an initiative of the Schools' Sports Foundation, headed by Yomi Elijah, a UK-trained football coach and former coach of Remo Stars, Lobi Stars, ABS FC, and Kogi United. It is proudly sponsored by Peculiar Ultimate Concerns. Other partners include Olafiranye Sports Foundation, the Oyo State Ministry of Education, Ministry of Sports, Oyo State Sports Council, Kidzfoot Nigeria, and others.
