Posted : 20 September 2024

As part of its youth talent development program, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) successfully completed a two-week training program for the National U-15 Boys, also known as the Future Eagles, in Abuja.

According to the NFF, this initiative aligns with FIFA's Talent Development Scheme (TDS), which aims to create a sustainable legacy for long-term talent development in the country.

The Head of the TDS delegation in Nigeria, Nasiru Jibril, a former Nigerian international, stated that the program is a welcome development, providing a pathway for children aged 12-15 to showcase their abilities and be discovered.

“With the main goal of the TDS project being to help raise the standards of national-team football globally for both men and women, driven by FIFA’s commitment to long-term global talent development, Jibril expressed confidence that the program will soon become a key source of players for our senior national teams.

"The Talent Development Scheme (TDS) is a project initiated by FIFA in all countries to benefit regions like Africa.

"Currently, we are working to give every child the chance to showcase their talent.

"We are focusing on players aged 12, 13, and 14, bringing them to this center to select the best and develop them into a group that will supply players to our national teams.

"From 2025, the U17 AFCON will become an annual competition, and without programs like this, countries may struggle to assemble the best players to represent them."

Head Coach of Nigeria's U-15 national team, Patrick Bassey, emphasized the transparency of the recruitment process, noting that merit has been the key factor, with no bias or favoritism.

"In the selection of the players, there has been no sentiment; every player scouted and brought here has the talent, skill, and commitment to the game.

"I believe these players will be very useful to the nation in the long run."

A total of 120 players, divided into two batches, were invited to camp for the first phase of the program. According to Coach Bassey, 40 players will be selected for another session before the end of the year.
