Our victory over Remo Stars, well deserved, says Rangers Int'l FC Coach

Posted : 29 February 2024

Rangers International FC Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu declared that the win over visiting Remo Stars FC in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) was earned and well deserved. The former MFM FC gaffer also emphasized that the team was not yet a favorite for the league title.

“It was a great match today, and deservedly, we emerged the winner against a quality side like Remo Stars. They gave us a good fight, but we knew what we wanted and went for it even when our first [half] had much to be desired. Our substitutions did the magic for us, just as the entire team fought a good fight for the maximum points. We keep working on our remaining matches with high optimism that we shall be rewarded at the end of the season.”

A sublime free kick from about 25 meters taken by substitute Agu Kenechukwu found its way past a stranded Bankole Kayode to nestle in the net on 56 minutes, turning out to be the match-winner for the ‘Flying Antelopes,’ Rangers International, as they subdued a stubborn Remo Stars in a matchday 22, NPFL 2023/2024 fixture.

The encounter at the main bowl of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, saw Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu keeping faith with the starting squad that defeated Doma United in Gombe over the weekend. Despite chances for Kazeem Ogunleye, Godwin Obaje, and Chidiebere Nwobodo, the visitors' backline, led by Junior Nduka and Fabian Nworie, provided good cover to their goalkeeper. When needed, Kayode Bankole produced crucial saves.

Coach Ilechukwu made two early substitutions in the second half, bringing in Agu Kenechukwu and Odoh Joel for Zulkifilu Rabiu and Ugwueze Chinemerem, pushing the visitors back. Chidiebere Nwobodo's dribble resulted in a foul, leading to Agu Kenechukwu's free-kick goal, sparking wild celebrations from the fans.

Kayode Bankole made crucial saves, including punching out a corner kick and blocking a free kick. Despite late attempts by the visitors, Rangers secured a sigh of relief and moved up to third place in the twenty-team log with 37 points from 22 matches. They will face Niger Tornadoes at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna, in a matchday 23 fixture at the weekend.
