Otto Addo, the former Ghana international and Borussia Dortmund talent coach, is set to return to the helm of the Black Stars on a 34-month contract following the conclusion of the current Bundesliga season, as announced by the club on Friday. Addo, who represented Ghana from 1999 to 2006, will resume the head coaching position he previously held during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, subsequently departing to assume a permanent role at Dortmund.
Ghana has been without a head coach since the departure of Chris Hughton midway through the Africa Cup of Nations in January, where the Black Stars failed to advance past the group stage. Borussia Dortmund officially revealed their parting with Addo on X (formerly Twitter), expressing their support for his transition to the coaching role with the Ghanaian national team and wishing him success in his new endeavor.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed Addo's appointment, citing his exceptional performance during the interview process and high rating by the search committee. Among a pool of qualified candidates, Addo stood out, impressing the committee with his vision and plans to rejuvenate the team, particularly given the urgency to effect positive changes in light of the team's recent challenges.
Addo, born in Germany, boasts an extensive career with Borussia Dortmund, where he played for six seasons concurrently with his tenure in the Ghanaian national team. His wealth of experience, both as a player and a coach, positions him well to lead the Black Stars as they navigate through a critical juncture in their footballing journey, aiming for resurgence and success under his guidance.
