In a thrilling encounter at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, Osun United claimed a crucial 1-0 victory over Madiba FC, propelling them to the top of the Conference B standings in the Nigerian National League (NNL).
Ganiyu Gberefun’s last-minute strike sealed the win for the away side, capping off a tense and fiercely contested match on Friday.
With this result, Osun United and Kun Khalifa are now tied on 10 points, though Kun Khalifa has a game in hand and will look to reclaim their position in their upcoming fixture on Saturday against Sporting Lagos.
The first half saw both teams grappling for dominance but failing to break the deadlock. Madiba FC’s goalkeeper, Abiola Sabitu, was instrumental in keeping the scoreline level with a series of audacious saves, including a critical one-on-one stop in the 30th minute.
Despite several chances, including a disallowed goal by Ebenezer in the 42nd minute, the first half ended goalless.
The second half resumed with renewed vigor as both sides sought the opener. Ganiyu Gberefun replaced Udor in the 53rd minute and immediately made an impact, releasing Naheem, whose shot hit the side netting.
As the match approached its final minutes, Osun United’s persistence paid off. In the 96th minute, Naheem Odugbemi expertly controlled the ball and laid it off to Ganiyu Gberefun, who fired a decisive shot into the net, sending the Osun United fans into a frenzy.
The win was slightly marred by the late sending-off of Mutiu Ganiyu for a retaliation incident, but Osun United held on to secure the victory.
This crucial win brings Osun United to 10 points, with only one loss in their last five NNL matches.
Osun United will face Saraki Boys, ABS FC of Ilorin, at home in their next match, a vital fixture for their campaign in Match Day 6 of the NNL.
