Osun to host 2024 NWFL Championship

Posted : 15 July 2024

The management of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship has officially announced that Osun State will host the 2024 edition of the league. This decision marks a significant milestone for the region and underscores the growing importance of women’s football in Nigeria. With an increasing number of teams and fans showing interest, the upcoming championship is expected to attract considerable attention and enthusiasm.

Osun State has shown a strong commitment to supporting women’s football, agreeing to host the championship as a demonstration of their dedication to the sport. This hosting opportunity not only highlights the state’s proactive stance but also aims to encourage local talent and inspire young female athletes to pursue their dreams in football. By taking on this responsibility, Osun State positions itself as a key player in promoting women’s sports in Nigeria.

To ensure a successful championship, the state has requested a few weeks from the leadership of the league body to organize all necessary logistics. This preparation period is crucial for addressing various aspects, including venue readiness, accommodation for teams, and arrangements for fans and officials. The state’s leadership is determined to create an event that is not only well-organized but also memorable for all participants.

Reflecting on previous events, it’s worth noting that the NWFL Premiership Super Six held in Yenegoa, Bayelsa State, which was won by Edo Queens, received accolades for its exceptional organization and the high performance of the participating teams. Such positive experiences set a precedent for future championships, and the expectations are high for Osun State to replicate or even surpass that standard.

The Chief Operating Officer of the NWFL, Modupe Shabi, confirmed the readiness of the league's secretariat to host the upcoming championship. She emphasized that the league is committed to maintaining a high standard for women’s football in Nigeria. This includes not only the quality of the tournament but also ensuring that all teams have a fair and competitive environment to showcase their skills.

Over 19 teams are expected to participate in the 2024 edition of the championship, a testament to the growing interest and investment in women's football across the country. The competition will provide an excellent platform for teams to demonstrate their abilities and vie for promotion to the prestigious NWFL Premier League. This promotional opportunity adds an extra layer of excitement and stakes to the tournament.

As the championship approaches, there is a palpable sense of anticipation among players, coaches, and fans alike. The event is seen as a significant opportunity to elevate the profile of women’s football and inspire the next generation of athletes. With Osun State at the helm, the 2024 NWFL Championship promises to be an event filled with competitive spirit, community support, and a celebration of women’s sports in Nigeria.
