Osun begins construction of new stadium

Posted : 13 February 2025

Governor Ademola Adeleke has launched the remodeling of Osogbo Stadium to world-class standards while also unveiling his administration’s sports sector agenda.

The event, held at the stadium, included the presentation of awards and cash gifts to accomplished sportsmen and women from Osun State.

Accompanied by top government officials and leading figures from the sports sector, the governor emphasized that this project is not merely a renovation but a complete redevelopment and remodeling of the state’s sports stadium to meet global standards.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to making Osun State home to the best sporting facilities in the country, the governor assured the public:

"By the time we complete this project, the stadium will be a magnificent edifice to behold. Our vision is to build a stadium capable of hosting various sporting events, including the National Sports Festival, the National Youth Games, and, more importantly, matches involving our national teams, including the Super Eagles, in their continental and international fixtures," he told the cheering crowd.

"The remodeling is not limited to the football pitch alone. There will be three (3) major pitches of international standard, along with facilities for other sports such as volleyball, swimming, handball, hockey, basketball, and more.

Additionally, the project will include a state-of-the-art indoor sports hall, hostels for athletes, and a four-star hotel. Revenue generation is incorporated into the entire project to ensure sustainability, with both short- and long-term viability. We envision a self-sustaining, holistic sporting infrastructure."

Further outlining his administration’s agenda for the sports sector, Governor Adeleke stated:

"Our administration has a well-defined sports development agenda.

As part of the implementation process, we are establishing strong institutional structures. I am pleased to inform you that we have finalized the legal framework for the creation of the Osun Sports Commission. This will enhance the harmonious development and administration of all sports in the state.

Additionally, our government is setting up a Sports Trust Fund to ensure sustainable sports financing. The legal structure for this initiative is almost finalized.

Beyond infrastructure and policy frameworks, the welfare of our athletes remains a top priority.

Going forward, our administration has decided to reward all athletes who have made the state proud in various championships. They will be handsomely rewarded based on their level of achievement.

We encourage both budding and established athletes to intensify their training and enhance their skills. The Osun sports sector is set for a silent revolution, and we urge sports professionals to remain in Osun and be part of this transformation."

The governor further stated:

"I am proud to announce that the two state-owned football teams, Osun United and Osun Babes Football Clubs, are receiving increased attention and support from the government. Reports reaching me indicate that they are performing well in their respective leagues.

Regarding contract athletes and coaches, I have directed an immediate review of their situation. The Deputy Governor will submit a report on the matter for further action."

Speaking at the occasion, Deputy Governor Prince Kola Adewusi, who also serves as the Commissioner for Sports Development, explained that the project includes extensive facilities, including two training pitches and specialized infrastructure for various sports.

Describing the unveiling as the beginning of a sporting revolution in Osun State, Prince Adewusi stated that Osun would soon be ready to host national sports competitions.

According to him, athletes who have left the state will be encouraged to return, as Osun aims to take a leading position in Nigeria’s sports landscape.

The project is set for completion within 12 months.
