Osimhen must win African Best Player award, cautions Super Eagles midfielder.

Posted : 01 November 2023
Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu has indirectly communicated his expectations to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the upcoming African Footballer of the Year Awards.

The 35-year-old midfielder, currently playing for Maccabi Jaffa in Israel with 24 international caps for the Super Eagles, last appeared for Nigeria in 2019 in a match against Madagascar, where Osimhen was left as an unused substitute. Given Victor Osimhen's impressive performances for Napoli, many Nigerians consider him the frontrunner for the African Footballer of the Year award, a sentiment shared by Ogu.

Ogu, like many fellow Nigerians, believes that Osimhen's exceptional achievements, including helping Napoli win their first league title in 33 years and becoming the highest-scoring African player in Serie A history, make him a deserving recipient of the award. In his message to the award organizers, Ogu called on CAF to draw inspiration from the Ballon d'Or ceremony, emphasizing the need for an award presentation that reflects the significance of African football. He strongly advocated for Osimhen as the unquestionable choice for the accolade.

In the midst of this, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the CAF Awards for 2023 will be hosted in Marrakech, Morocco, a selection that could offer hints about the recipient of the African Men's Footballer of the Year Award.
