Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen is the final player to arrive for international duty in Uyo as Nigeria gears up for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin Republic. Osimhen joined his teammates on Thursday, receiving a warm welcome from team officials and fellow players.
Osimhen's arrival was delayed due to his need to complete a season-long loan move to Galatasaray. The transfer process was complicated, with speculation linking him to PSG, Chelsea, and Al Ahli, but none of these deals were finalized before the transfer window closed on August 30.
The 25-year-old striker is now set to integrate into the Super Eagles squad's preparations for their important match against Benin Republic. His addition is seen as a significant boost for the team as they aim to strengthen their performance.
Under interim manager Austin Eguavoen, the Super Eagles began their preparations for this critical game on September 3. Osimhen's return is anticipated to positively impact the squad, especially given their recent form, where they have won only one of their last four matches without him.
Osimhen has been absent from international duty since leading Nigeria to the 2023 AFCON final against Ivory Coast in Abidjan. He missed friendly matches against Ghana and Mali in March and was also unavailable for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic in June.
The Super Eagles will face Benin Republic on Saturday, September 7, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. Following this match, they will play against Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium on Tuesday, September 10, with kick-off scheduled for 2 p.m.
Osimhen's presence is expected to significantly enhance Nigeria's attacking options and contribute to their campaign in the upcoming qualifiers.
