Orlando Pirates secured a 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in the DStv Premiership, and coach Jose Riveiro highlighted that their performance was in line with their recent matches, with the key difference being that they finally found the back of the net.
Thabiso Monyane's goal in the 73rd minute was the sole strike that sealed the home win at Orlando Stadium, marking only the Buccaneers' third league win this season.
The victory came on the heels of Orlando Pirates' quarterfinal exit from the Carling Knockout tournament at the hands of struggling Richards Bay and marked their second win in seven games across all competitions.
Riveiro observed, "It was much the same game we played in the last five occasions, under control with all the possession, with the opponent denying the spaces behind the last line, grouping in front of the box, and always with the risk of being caught on the transition."
He went on to describe the first half as well-controlled, emphasizing the need for an early goal to ease the game. Riveiro acknowledged that the goalless scoreline at halftime was risky, given their busy schedule with six matches in 18 days.
The second half saw a more disjointed game, especially after introducing substitutes, but the coach praised the team's determination to chase a goal and secure the crucial three points.
In the end, the victory for Orlando Pirates was hard-earned and well-deserved, despite the challenging circumstances they faced throughout the match.
