Posted : 28 January 2025

Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi has completed a move to Greek football powerhouse Olympiacos, sealing a €2.5 million transfer from Portuguese side Boavista. The 25-year-old left-back signed a four-year contract, becoming Olympiacos' third acquisition of the summer transfer window following the arrivals of Horta and Betancourt.

Speaking for the first time as an Olympiacos player, Onyemaechi expressed his joy and determination. In a video released by the club, he shared his thoughts on the move: “I’m really happy to be here. When I informed my family, they were supportive, and now I’m eager to get started. I can’t wait to see the supporters in the stadium.”

Olympiacos currently sits atop the Greek Super League standings and occupies 12th place in the Europa League phase, offering Onyemaechi the opportunity to compete at a high level. Reflecting on his decision to join the club, the Nigerian international emphasized the lure of European competition. “Playing in Europe was a significant factor in my decision. It’s an opportunity I couldn’t pass up, and I’m thrilled to be here,” he said.

Renowned for his pace and defensive versatility, Onyemaechi gave an insight into his playing style, emphasizing his readiness to contribute on both ends of the pitch. “I’m a fast player who can support the team in attack and defense. I’m always prepared to give my best for the team,” he noted.

The left-back also expressed his excitement about playing in front of Olympiacos’ passionate fans, describing it as a dream for any footballer. “Every player dreams of experiencing such an incredible atmosphere. I’m looking forward to feeling it firsthand and seeing how the supporters react during games,” Onyemaechi added.

Onyemaechi took to social media to celebrate his transfer, sharing his gratitude and excitement with fans. He wrote, “New home. God is the greatest,” reflecting his optimism for this new chapter in his career.

The Owerri-born defender brings valuable experience from his time at Boavista, where he made 77 appearances, scored five goals, and delivered three assists. At Olympiacos, he will aim to build on his achievements and make a significant impact both domestically and on the European stage.
