Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi ended his goal drought with a crucial strike in Boavista's 2-2 draw against Estrela Amadora at the Estádio José Gomes on Sunday.
Onyemaechi, playing as a left-back, broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute by converting a loose ball from a throw-in, finishing calmly with his preferred left foot.
Estrela Amadora equalized in the 34th minute through a precise shot by former Manchester United player Nani, who found the bottom left corner from just outside the penalty area.
Boavista regained the lead in stoppage time when Ilija Vukotić capitalized on a mistake by Estrela's goalkeeper, who mishandled a cross. However, Onyemaechi was partly at fault for Estrela’s second equalizer, as he failed to clear a pass, allowing Portuguese forward Kikas to capitalize.
Seven minutes before the match ended, Onyemaechi narrowly avoided a red card after a VAR review. He was instead shown a yellow card by the central referee for a foul.
Prior to this goal, Onyemaechi hadn’t scored since January 29, 2023, when he netted in Boavista's 4-2 victory over Portimonense at the Estádio do Bessa.
Throughout his time at Boavista, the 25-year-old has made 64 appearances, scoring three goals and providing two assists, but his international appearances with the Super Eagles have not seen him find the net. Despite chances during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Rwanda, he was unable to add to his tally.
