Onuachu trains at Southampton, Aribo's absence fuels speculation

Posted : 05 July 2023
Southampton's Super Eagles striker, Paul Onuachu, has returned to training for the upcoming pre-season games, indicating his commitment to the club.

However, Joe Aribo was absent from training, raising speculations about his potential departure from the team.

Both Nigerian internationals joined Southampton last season but struggled to make a significant impact.

Aribo managed to score only two goals in 27 appearances across all competitions, while Onuachu failed to find the back of the net in his 11 appearances, despite joining the club in January.

Aribo has been strongly linked with a move away from Southampton after just one season, with recent reports suggesting a possible transfer to Turkish giants Besiktas.

The 26-year-old midfielder struggled to find his best form under three different managers last season, making it difficult for him to settle at the club.

Fueling further speculation about his departure, Aribo was absent from the team's first training session after the holidays.

In contrast, his compatriot Paul Onuachu participated in the training, indicating that he might receive another opportunity with the club.

Onuachu, who was the top scorer for Genk in the Belgian League earlier in the season, joined Southampton on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

However, he only managed to make 11 appearances in his debut season for the club, which was battling relegation at the time of his arrival.

Coach Jose Peseiro did not include Onuachu in the squad that secured qualification for the next African Cup of Nations after defeating Sierra Leone, whereas Aribo played 70 minutes in that game.
