Onuachu's mentor, Aina's ex-boss, leaves struggling Southampton

Posted : 08 April 2025

Southampton have parted ways with Ivan Juric, the manager who was once Paul Onuachu’s advocate and Ola Aina's former boss. The decision comes after a disappointing tenure, with the club's relegation to the Championship now officially confirmed.

Juric was brought in with high hopes of rescuing Southampton’s season. However, his efforts failed to produce the turnaround needed, with poor performances and results continuing to plague the team throughout his time in charge.

The club released an official statement confirming the end of his tenure, which read: “We can confirm that we have today reached an agreement with our Men’s First Team Manager, Ivan Juric, to end his spell at the club… Unfortunately, we haven’t seen performances progress the way we had hoped… but we would like to thank Ivan and his staff for their honesty and hard work.”

Juric, who gained recognition as a tactical mind during his Serie A stint, had worked with Super Eagles full-back Ola Aina at Torino before arriving at Southampton. His arrival marked a new opportunity for Paul Onuachu, who had been sidelined for an extended period under previous managers but was given a starting role under Juric.

Despite Onuachu's positive contributions, scoring four goals in his last nine matches, Juric’s lack of connection with the squad and his reported shortcomings in man-management led to a loss of internal support. This, combined with poor results, ultimately led to the manager’s departure.

With Juric now gone, Simon Rusk has been appointed as interim manager for the remainder of the season, with Adam Lallana also assisting. The search for a permanent replacement is already underway, with Group Technical Director Johannes Spors leading the efforts. Frank Lampard, who has impressed at Coventry City, is believed to be one of the leading candidates.

As Southampton prepares for life in the Championship, the club remains focused on making a swift return to the Premier League. "Our goal is to restore a sense of pride for the fans in their team and club once again," they stated.

For Onuachu, the managerial change may further affect his role at the club, especially with ongoing transfer speculation ahead of the summer window.
