Onuachu makes first squad appearance in 419 days against Bournemouth

Southampton manager Russell Martin has revealed his starting lineup for the Premier League match against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Monday evening. 


A significant highlight for Nigerian fans is the unexpected inclusion of Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu in the matchday squad. Onuachu will be available as a substitute, alongside his compatriot Joe Aribo, who is also on the bench. Additionally, Chelsea loanee Lesley Ugochukwu returns to the starting lineup after previously coming on as a substitute in the match against Ipswich Town.


It's been a long time since Onuachu last appeared in a Southampton matchday squad; the last occasion was on August 8, 2023, during a Carabao Cup match against Gillingham. Since that time, 419 days have passed since he last played in a competitive game while wearing the Southampton jersey.


In search of more consistent playing time, Onuachu was loaned to Trabzonspor for the 2023-2024 season, where he thrived, scoring 17 goals in 25 appearances. His performance in Turkey helped him regain his form after a challenging stint with Southampton.


Trabzonspor showed interest in bringing Onuachu back during the summer transfer window but were unable to finalize a deal due to Southampton's high valuation of the player at €15 million. This valuation highlights the club's belief in Onuachu's potential despite his limited appearances.


Since joining Southampton from Racing Genk in January 2023, Onuachu has made a total of twelve appearances for the club. His return to the squad signals a potential turning point in his journey with the Saints.


As they face Bournemouth, Southampton is eager to secure their first victory since returning to the Premier League, and the inclusion of Onuachu may provide them with a much-needed boost in their quest for success.
