The Premier League has released its statistical leaders for the first three matchdays, with notable mention of Nottingham Forest's Nigerian defender, Ola Aina. According to the official website, Aina has made a significant impact for his team this season.
Aina has been a consistent presence in Nottingham Forest’s lineup, starting every match so far. He played the full 90 minutes against Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and contributed 54 minutes in the season opener against Bournemouth.
Despite his strong performance, no Nigerian players were highlighted in the categories of goals, assists, speed, chances created, shots, shot conversion rate, passes completed, tackles won, blocks, duels won, successful dribbles, or clearances.
However, Ola Aina stood out in the interceptions category. He ranked as the second-highest player with nine interceptions over three games, only behind Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo, who led with 11 interceptions.
Aina’s interception stats include one against Bournemouth, three against Southampton, and a standout five against Wolves. His performance in this area demonstrates his defensive prowess.
West Ham United’s Guido Rodriguez and Wolves’ Mario Lemina share the third position with eight interceptions each, while Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch, Everton’s Tim Iroegbunam, and Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot follow closely behind.
As a versatile defender, Aina, who is comfortable with both feet, has been utilized as a left-back this season, despite his primary role being right-back. Given Bright Osayi-Samuel's withdrawal from the Super Eagles' squad due to injury, Aina is expected to secure a spot in the starting lineup for the upcoming match against Benin’s Cheetahs.
