Ondo State's U-17 YSFON team has emerged as the winner of the 2024 President Unity Cup, organized by the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON).
The talented Ondo State team defeated their counterparts from Kwara State 4-1 in the final to lift the trophy.
With this win, the Ondo State YSFON U-17 team earned a ticket to represent Ondo State and Nigeria in a European youth championship scheduled for Norway.
Asogbon Adeola scored a goal and provided two assists in the final, finishing with five goals and winning the highest goal scorer's award.
Asogbon, speaking with journalists after the game, expressed his delight in winning the trophy and helping the Ondo State team achieve its goal.
"I'm excited to have won the highest goal scorer's award and to have helped my team win the trophy. It was a collective effort from all of us, and I'm glad we did it in style."
The Ilaje-born striker added that now is the time to train harder and aim for more laurels.
"We won't stop here. I'm happy that our club's management has already rolled out programs to keep us in shape ahead of major upcoming tournaments. We won't relent."
Head coach of the Ondo State team, Sunday Taiwo, commended his players for following instructions.
"I'm glad we won, and I'm happy my players converted chances early enough. It was a good game."
He also thanked the executive members of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria, Ondo State Chapter, for their incredible support.
"To be honest, YSFON executives in Ondo State are relentless fighters who believe in achieving results. They surprised many people. Other states should emulate their zeal for achieving success."
The Chairman of the Ondo State Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), Abayomi Ogunlade, described the achievement as the beginning of many more successes to come.
"We surprised those who doubted us, and Allah supported us throughout. I'm glad we did it."
He attributed the success of the tournament to the unity of the YSFON executive, determination, and divine intervention.
"No one believed the state government didn't support us despite our pleas, but God in His infinite mercy crowned our efforts, and we won. Not only did we win, but we also secured a ticket to represent Ondo State and Nigeria in a youth championship in Europe next year."
Regarding preparations for the European youth championship, Vice Chairman of YSFON Ondo State, Tayo Onilude, said, "What God can't do doesn't exist."
"The same way God helped us with this, He will surely support and stand by us again. I'm happy we achieved it."
The trophy won by the state's U-17 youth team is the second major football trophy Ondo State has won since its creation.
The first major football trophy was lifted in 2015 by Sunshine Queens FC.
Eighteen states participated in the President Unity U-17 Cup.
