Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo has promised that plans are well underway to construct a brand new stadium in the state to nurture talents who will represent both the state and the country in international competitions.
Aiyedatiwa made this known in his speech at an event commemorating the 2024 Olympic Day Run held at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure.
The event, featuring Olympians, sportsmen, and women, started from the Government House and concluded at the state sports complex.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Mr. Olayide Adelam, stated that efforts were underway to ensure work begins at the site of the new stadium to alleviate the strain on the old stadium.
He pledged that the state would continue to support the objectives of the Olympic celebration, including promoting national unity and grassroots sports development.
“Efforts are underway to award the contract for the new stadium at Araromi in Akure to alleviate pressure on the facilities at the Ondo State Sports Complex and enhance sports development in the state.
“The contract for upgrading the Akure Township Stadium has already been awarded by the state government to a reputable contractor to bring the facilities up to international standards for the sports enthusiasts of Ondo State.
“Other mini-stadia in Ondo, Ikare, and Ile Oluji will also be awarded soon to meet the desires and aspirations of the people.
“Our administration will continue to prioritize sports,” he said.
Aiyedatiwa added that his administration was committed to providing the state with a fitting stadium and would prioritize sports while also paying attention to the welfare of athletes.
He described sports as a significant avenue for social interaction and integration among youths.
“Sports is very close to our hearts in Ondo, and our administration will not relent in efforts to involve the people in sporting activities for health benefits and as a chosen career where we can gainfully employ the youth,” he said.
In his welcome address, Mr. Saka Ogunleye, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, emphasized that the continuity of the event was clear evidence that sports remained a vital tool for promoting global peace.
“The expansion of the event to Ondo State clearly demonstrates that sports promote global peace.
“We are committed to prioritizing sports and engaging youths meaningfully through sporting activities. Sports facilities are being upgraded throughout the state.
“Our goal is to ensure that our athletes can compete with their counterparts from other states, achieve success, and go on to represent Nigeria in international competitions.”
The representative of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Mr. Sylvester Ikuejamoye, noted in his remarks that sporting activities strengthen both the mind and body.
Ikuejamoye also emphasized that healthy living can be achieved through sports.
