Onana error costs United as African players shine in Europe

Posted : 20 January 2025

Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana made a costly mistake during Manchester United's 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford in the Premier League this past weekend.

Onana initially collected a cross but then mishandled the ball, which allowed Georginio Rutter to capitalize and score the final goal of the match. This error compounded Manchester United's struggles, as they fell to another defeat in a challenging season.

Brighton had already taken the lead earlier in the match through Gambian Yankuba Minteh’s goal, setting the tone for a dominant performance. With this victory, Brighton extended their impressive record, having won six out of their last seven league encounters against United.

The loss highlighted United's ongoing issues, with Onana's mistake adding to the team's defensive woes. Despite showing some promise in certain phases of the game, United couldn't recover from the early setbacks they faced.

Brighton, on the other hand, demonstrated clinical finishing and solid team play to secure all three points. Their victory further solidified their position as a team to watch in the league this season, particularly with their strong record against United.

For Onana, this blunder is yet another moment to reflect on as he settles into life at Manchester United. His performance, though otherwise commendable this season, will be remembered for this error, which ultimately cost his team a chance to earn a point.

As Manchester United seeks to recover, the team will need to address both individual mistakes and collective defensive frailties if they are to challenge for higher positions in the Premier League. The focus will now be on bouncing back and rectifying these issues ahead of their next fixtures.
