Omeruo elaborates on why the Saudi Arabia friendly is appropriate
Posted : 13 October 2023
Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo expresses excitement about the friendly match against Saudi Arabia in preparation for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to begin in January next year.
Nigeria will face Saudi Arabia at Estadio Municipal de Portimao in Portugal on Friday. This match is part of the preparations for the three-time African champions leading up to the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast in January.
The Saudi team has historically underperformed in football, with their most notable achievement being a victory over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup.
However, Omeruo, a defender for the Super Eagles, believes that the Saudi team will provide a good challenge for Nigeria.
“I think it’s a good step. There have been significant changes in the Saudi Arabian team,” mentioned Omeruo during the pre-match press conference.
“We all witnessed their victory against Argentina at the 2022 World Cup, and I believe playing these matches is beneficial for us. Hopefully, we can have one or two games before the AFCON starts.”
The draw for the 2023 AFCON was held in Abidjan on Thursday, placing Nigeria in Group A alongside hosts Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau. Omeruo was part of the winning team in 2013, and he aims to achieve a similar victory next year.
