Kasimpasa's Kenneth Omeruo has conveyed a message to his Super Eagles teammates ahead of the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe. The former Chelsea central defender emphasized that participating in the next World Cup, hosted in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, would be the pinnacle of their careers. Among the 23 players selected by manager Jose Peseiro for the qualifiers, only five, including Omeruo, have previous World Cup experience.
Omeruo, part of the squad that missed out on the 2022 World Cup, has played in six of the last seven games for the Nigeria national team at the World Cup. The 30-year-old urged his teammates to approach the matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe with seriousness, highlighting the importance of securing a spot in the next World Cup.
Expressing anticipation for the qualifiers, Omeruo stated, "We missed out on the last World Cup, so it's a serious matter for us. We are here to do what we have to do to get our ticket for the next World Cup." He shared his World Cup memories, describing the amazing atmosphere and encouraging younger players to witness the tournament's unique experience.
Reflecting on previous encounters with Lesotho and Zimbabwe, Omeruo emphasized the significance of adhering to the game plan and approaching the matches with a serious mindset to secure victories. With key players absent, Omeruo is likely to captain the team against Lesotho on Thursday if selected in the starting lineup by Jose Peseiro.
