Joseph Olowu, an Arsenal Academy graduate and central defender for Doncaster Rovers, has been recognized as the sole player of Nigerian heritage nominated for an award at the 2025 EFL Awards.
Hailing from Ibadan, Olowu has chosen to represent Nigeria on the international stage, despite being eligible to play for England. His commitment to the Super Eagles stems from a pivotal meeting during the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland, where he spoke with Nigeria Football Federation officials about his aspiration to play for the African giants.
The 25-year-old defender has earned a spot in the running for the prestigious EFL Player in the Community award, alongside fellow nominees Jack Stacey (Norwich City) and Taylor Moore (Bristol Rovers). This is a testament to his impactful contributions off the pitch.
Earlier this month, Olowu was also named the League Two winner of the Player in the Community award, sponsored by the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), for his outstanding service to the local community. His charitable endeavors have involved working with schools to promote anti-bullying and anti-racism initiatives.
In his efforts to engage with students at Doncaster Deaf School, Olowu went above and beyond by learning sign language, ensuring he could communicate more effectively during his visits. His actions have demonstrated a genuine commitment to connecting with and supporting his community.
Furthermore, the 25-year-old has consistently supported the Football Welcomes initiative, which aids refugees and asylum seekers. Olowu organized collection drives among his teammates and personally contributed by purchasing essential items to support the cause.
On the pitch, Olowu has enjoyed a solid season, featuring in 39 matches across all competitions for Doncaster Rovers, contributing three goals and two assists. The winners of the EFL Awards will be announced during a live ceremony in London on Sunday, April 27.
