President Bola Tinubu has announced the appointment of ace sports investor and main organizer of the famous Gold Label Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, Bukola Olopade, as the substantive Director General (D-G) of the newly inaugurated National Sports Commission (NSC).
The appointment followed the selection of the former 2nd Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as the Chairman of the NSC.
While many sports journalists hailed Shehu Dikko’s appointment as Chairman of the National Sports Commission as an excellent choice, few anticipated that an even greater gem was yet to come.

President Tinubu’s decision to appoint Olopade as the D-G of the NSC has been described as a top-tier selection—a crowning jewel that brings to the commission a man renowned for achieving extraordinary results against all odds.
Olopade first entered the Nigerian sports scene as Commissioner for Sports in Ogun State under Governor Gbenga Daniel, during which Ogun State hosted the National Sports Festival. His journey didn’t end there; venturing into the private sector, he transformed the sporting industry into a vibrant hub, revitalizing events and showing resilience in an arena where few dare to tread.
With over two decades of experience as a seasoned sports journalist and expert in sports administration and entrepreneurship, Olopade has consistently set higher standards. His nearly decade-long success in organizing the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, backed by steady private sector support, stands as a testament to his skill and tenacity—an achievement many deemed unattainable.
Olopade’s proven track record in elevating Nigeria’s sports landscape, his extensive global network, and his expertise in managing multimillion-dollar budgets and assets will be invaluable in his new role as the D-G of the NSC.
He is well-positioned to transform the National Sports Commission into a shining beacon of excellence.
President Tinubu has undoubtedly made a monumental choice for Nigerian sports. The future looks brighter, and stakeholders commend this decision as heralding an era of remarkable progress for the industry.
