Ollie Watkins' Late Winner Sends England to Euro 2024 Final

Posted : 11 July 2024

England striker Ollie Watkins revealed that he "manifested" his crucial last-minute goal against the Netherlands, which propelled his team into the Euro 2024 final. The Aston Villa forward came on late in the game in Dortmund and expertly slotted home the winning goal in England's 2-1 victory. His goal was set up by Chelsea's Cole Palmer, who also entered the match with him in the 81st minute.

Watkins shared that he had told Palmer at halftime that they would both come onto the pitch and Palmer would assist him. "It happened, I manifested it, and as soon as he turned, I knew I needed to make a move. You don't get that opportunity very often, so I had to be greedy, I had to take it," he explained. The striker described the moment the ball went into the bottom corner as incredibly special, noting that he had never hit a ball so cleanly before.

Having been largely sidelined throughout the tournament, except for a 20-minute appearance against Denmark, Watkins admitted to feeling frustrated. "To be honest, recently I got a little bit frustrated – I don't like to be on the bench, I've had the best season of my career," he said. He also mentioned the overwhelming support he received, with many people predicting he would score when he came on, and joked about them giving him lottery numbers for the final.

Watkins' dramatic goal marked only the fourth of his international career and his second in a competitive match, the first being against San Marino in his debut in March 2021. In his first major tournament for England, he expressed his immense joy at scoring, describing the experience as unlike any other. "When you score, there's emotions that come through your body but this is just a different feeling," Watkins said, adding that he wanted to savor every moment on the pitch. Looking ahead, England will face Spain in the final in Berlin, aiming to improve on their runner-up finish in the 2020 Euros.
