Ollie Watkins Fires Aston Villa to Victory Over Newcastle

Posted : 20 April 2025

Ollie Watkins was determined to prove Unai Emery wrong after being left out of Aston Villa's starting lineup for their Champions League quarter-final tie against Paris Saint-Germain. The England striker had to settle for substitute appearances in both legs of the tie, despite having played a crucial role in Villa's journey to the competition.

He expressed his frustration over not being involved in the biggest game of the season, particularly after Villa’s narrow exit from the tournament, which left him disappointed by his bit-part role.

Watkins voiced his anger to Emery, revealing that he was "fuming" about not being included in the starting XI. He acknowledged that while he respected the manager's decision, he was not content to sit on the bench.

The striker emphasized how important the Champions League was to him and how much he wanted to contribute to Villa’s efforts on the biggest stage. He made sure to make his point clear, which he backed up with a superb performance in Villa's 4-1 victory over Newcastle, contributing a goal and an assist.

Just 33 seconds into the game, Watkins showcased his sharp finishing ability, scoring to give Villa an early lead. He then provided a crucial assist for Ian Maatsen, who restored Villa's advantage after Newcastle had equalized.

Dan Burn's own goal and Amadou Onana's thunderous strike completed the victory, which secured Villa's fifth consecutive league win. The result lifted Villa to sixth place in the Premier League, keeping them in the hunt for a top-five finish and a Champions League spot next season.

Emery praised Watkins' attitude and commitment, highlighting the striker’s high level of dedication to the team. Despite his earlier frustration, Watkins channeled his anger into motivation, helping Villa strengthen their push for European qualification.

As for Newcastle, their defeat left them just two points ahead of Villa, with the race for Champions League places intensifying as the season draws to a close. Newcastle's assistant manager, Jason Tindall, acknowledged Villa’s superiority on the day, suggesting that their congested fixture schedule might have played a role in the loss.
