Olarenwaju Kayode leaves Gençlerbirliği after seven months

Posted : 19 March 2024

Olarenwaju Ayobami Kayode, the former Manchester City forward and member of the Super Eagles, finds himself clubless after parting ways with Gençlerbirliği, a second-tier Turkish team, by mutual agreement.

The 30-year-old Nigerian striker's move to Gençlerbirliği in September last year was unexpected given his footballing pedigree and experience.

Kayode explained that he terminated his contract due to his lack of enjoyment in football, particularly struggling to find form during loan spells at Sivasspor and Umraniyespor.

His time with Gençlerbirliği proved underwhelming, managing just four goals in twenty appearances for the club based in Ankara.

The club officially announced Kayode's departure on their social media platforms, stating that it was at the player's request due to family reasons, expressing gratitude for his contributions and wishing him success in his future endeavors.

Kayode's football journey began in Ivory Coast with ASEC Mimosas, followed by loan spells in Nigeria with Heartland, before a breakthrough loan move to Maccabi Netanya in Israel, where he scored prolifically.

His impressive stint in Israel earned him a move to Austria Wien, where he continued to showcase his scoring abilities, attracting the attention of Manchester City, who signed him for €4 million.

However, Kayode struggled to make an impact at Manchester City, enduring loan spells, including one at Girona, where he faced challenges in maintaining his goal-scoring form.

Despite his club struggles, Kayode earned his debut for the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, in a friendly match against Senegal in 2017, illustrating his potential and talent on the international stage.
