Manchester United U21 kicked off their EFL Trophy campaign with an exciting penalty shootout victory, triumphing 5-3 against League Two side Stockport County at Edgeley Park on Tuesday.
In the thrilling encounter, the Red Devils secured an additional bonus point by clinching victory in the penalty shootout. One of the standout performers was Anglo-Nigerian forward Shola Shoretire, who confidently converted his penalty opportunity to contribute to Manchester United's success.
The starting lineup of Manchester United included not only Shoretire but also two other players of Nigerian descent, right-back Habeeb Ogunneye and central midfielder Maxi Oyedele. On the other side, Isaac Olaofe, who came off the bench for Stockport County with just ten minutes left in regulation time, managed to make his presence felt.
After a goalless first half, the game's intensity escalated in the 63rd minute as Joe Hugill capitalized on a rebound opportunity to secure the lead for Manchester United. The goal came shortly after goalkeeper Jordan Smith had initially saved a penalty, awarded due to a foul on Ethan Williams by Akil Wright within the penalty area.
Stockport County managed to level the playing field in the eleventh minute of second-half stoppage time, with Isaac Olaofe confidently converting a penalty after Ibou Toura was fouled by Harrison.
Shola Shoretire continued to showcase his composure as he calmly slotted home Manchester United's second penalty with a dink down the middle. Isaac Olaofe, showing his prowess from the spot, successfully converted Stockport County's fourth penalty.
With their first EFL Trophy victory under their belt, Manchester United U21 is gearing up for their upcoming match against Bolton Wanderers, tentatively scheduled for September 26.
