Okonkwo must sign a new contract with Arsenal before moving on to another loan - Sturm Graz chief

Andreas Schicker, the sports director of Sturm Graz, has indicated that the future of goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo with the Austrian Cup champions is intricately linked to his decision regarding a new contract at his parent club, Arsenal.

Okonkwo, a product of Arsenal's renowned Hale End Academy, currently finds himself in the final year of his contract with the London-based club. 

Should he be loaned out again without committing to a fresh deal, Arsenal would risk losing him on a free transfer at the end of the upcoming summer.

Reports have emerged suggesting that Arsenal is contemplating the possibility of selling Okonkwo in the current transfer window, as this would provide them with additional financial resources to bolster their squad ahead of their highly anticipated return to the prestigious UEFA Champions League next season.

However, Sturm Graz has explicitly expressed their strong interest in securing a loan deal for Okonkwo throughout the entirety of the 2023-2024 season. 

They are eager to bring in the highly talented goalkeeper, who has represented England at youth level but also possesses Nigerian heritage.

Under the previous agreement between Sturm Graz and Arsenal, the Premier League club had been responsible for covering a portion of Okonkwo's wages. 

This arrangement reflects the collaborative relationship between the two clubs, further highlighting Sturm Graz's desire to continue their association with the promising shot-stopper.

The situation surrounding Okonkwo's future is delicately poised, with the decision to extend his stay at Sturm Graz contingent upon his willingness to negotiate and finalize a new contract with Arsenal. 

Both clubs are aware of the stakes involved, and the outcome will significantly impact the career trajectory of the young goalkeeper as he navigates the complex landscape of professional football.

"If there is still a loan to Sturm Graz , he has to find a solution with Arsenal and extend the contract there.

"These talks are currently underway. I hope that there is a solution, he extends and works on loan for another year," the Sturm Graz chief said.
